Foundations of the Christian Faith The Bible teaches that every Scripture is God-breathed, is given by His inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16). When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world. But, because of God's great love for humanity, He sent His Son Jesus to this earth to provide a way for all human beings to have their sins forgiven and to escape going to hell as a consequence of their sin (John 3:16). He did so by taking our place and allowing Himself to be crucified. He spent three days in hell before being resurrected back to life. Many people saw Him as He spent 40 more days on this earth before ascending into heaven to live once again with God the Father. All human beings can experience the benefits provided by Jesus' obedience on the cross. They do so by choosing to believe in their hearts that Jesus is the Son of God and that He is alive today (Romans 10:9). The moment a person does that, he becomes a Christian and the Spirit of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, begins to live inside that person. If you have not yet made that decision,
you can do so now by praying this: "God, I know that I have sinned
many times and have done things that are not right in Your eyes. I choose
to believe that Jesus is Your Son, that he came to earth so that I can
obtain forgiveness for all the things I have done wrong and go to heaven
when I die. Please forgive me now and wash me clean. I welcome you Jesus
into my life. Please take control of my life and help me walk in ways that
are pleasing to You. Thank you for saving me from an eternity in hell.
Amen." When you become a Christian, it doesn't mean all your problems are over. It doesn't mean that you will never sin again. What is does mean is that you will never have to be alone again - Jesus wants to be a part of every aspect of your life and wants to help you get through every difficult circumstance that you are presently facing. He knows that you will sin again because you are a human being. But He is also willing to forgive that sin if you will admit that you did it and ask Him to forgive you (1 John 1:9). He's willing to do that because He loves you more than you will be able to comprehend. As a new Christian, it is very important that you start to learn what being a Christian is all about. You do so by reading the Bible, by attending a church that believes in Jesus as Lord and the role of the Holy Spirit, and by hanging out with other Christians. It is also important to start praying regularly. Praying is simply having a conversation with God. He wants you to tell Him about your struggles, your worries, your pain because He wants to help you get through those things. And He wants to talk to you and comfort you and tell you how much He loves you. You can pick up a Bible at any Christian bookstore (the New International Version and Amplified Bible are recommended). Begin reading the book of John in the New Testament. There is a list of recommended churches on this website. Start attending a new believers' class, Bible study group or home group - whatever the church has to enable you to grow as a Christian and become equipped to live in this sin-filled world. There will be people at then church who will teach you how to pray and where to find the truths you need to read in the Bible. If your present circle of friends is totally against God and puts you down because you are a Christian, you probably need to make some new friends. Attendance at a good church will enable you to find some people you can relate to, people that will support you and pray with you and help you find the healing you need. |
